The Most Popular ‘90s Movies in Texas by Metro Area

Are you ready to go back to the ‘90s?

The Longhorn state is known for many things, including sprawling bluebonnet fields, Whataburger, and long empty highways, but did you know there’s some big love in the big country when it comes to movies made in the ’90s?

From Titanic to Terminator, Texans love seeing Mrs. Doubtfire’s whipped cream face yelling, “Hello!”, watching Kevin realize he’s home alone, and Agents K and J flushing out unwelcome aliens from New York.

So which ‘90s movies do Texans love? FrontierBundles decided to map out the twenty-eighth state and figure out which movie each metro area has nostalgia for.

map

Interesting Findings:

  • 1/4 of the metro areas favored Titanic, which has grossed over $650 million since its release date.
  • None of the movies that made the list take place in Texas.
  • The Lion King found some love down south. Harlingen-Weslaco-Brownsville-McAllen is the only metro area to prefer an animated film as opposed to live-action.
  • Three metro areas preferred the second movie in a series.
  • All of the movies on our list have made over $200 million to date.
  • More than half of the metro areas preferred drama or adventure genres.
  • Texas has one of the highest employment rates of film and video editors, particularly in Dallas.
  • In the past twelve months, the question “who played Jack in the Titanic” has been a popular search in Houston. Leading us to believe that Space City residents aren’t familiar with Leonardo DiCaprio’s earlier films.
  • Ice was on the minds of the people in Laredo Texas. May 24, 2020, called for a big hail storm and coincidentally had a spike in searches for the movie Titanic.
  • Thanks to the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace rose in search popularity two days after Skywalker came out.
  • Laredo Texas knows a winner when they see one. The top three most popular films–Titanic, Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace, and The Lion King–were searched for in this area.
  • Home Alone and Ghost both turn thirty this year.

Methodology

FrontierBundles looked at the search volume from March 1, 2020, to June 1, 2020, for the twenty highest-grossing films* from the 1990s. From there, the team was able to determine which movie each metro area searched for the most, compared that title to what other metro areas in Texas were searching for.

*Note: Only 13 of the 20 movies made the list due to search volume.
